Rediscovery of Beijing's Folk Toys
Input Date:05/31/2007 Read: [Print] [Close]

In our rediscovery of Beijing's folk toys, we have found what a joy they bring to life. Some of these toys have become popular again among teenagers and some have been included in the primary and middle school handwork textbooks. These toy are also enjoyed by adults. In the mid-1980s, after I retired, I made studies and wrote essays on the social and health benefits of Beijing's folk toys.

Two or three exhibitions of folk toys are still held every year A display this year at Duanmen attracted a large number of visitors. Adults felt as if they had returned to their childhood knowing smiles crept over their faces. It was entirely the adult who were excited at the exhibition. Except for the kite an pinwheel, children didn't know the use of these traditional toy used as they now are to plastic, mechanical and electronic toy

I think folk toys represent people's idealism and yearning for happiness. This alone should insure that they will not disappear. The toys are cheap, uncomplicated and made from simple materials, but they can enrich lives. I am also a good example of how folk toys can be a successful career. Yet the toys are also a art form. I hope to see this art developed and continued for at least another century.
