Definition
The word tɑotɑo describes the way large quantities of water roll forward, jue means “stop” or“break”. Tɑotɑo bu jue was originally used to describe the way large bodies of water roll forward without stopping; later it was used metaphorically to describe large amounts of something (usually discourse) coming forward endlessly without end.

Origin
In the Han dynasty (206 BC—AD 220) tɑotɑo bu jue (滔滔不绝) was written as tɑotɑo bu jie (滔滔不竭). Jie and jue meant the same.
Besides, according to historical records, Zhang Jiuling (AD 678—740), a famous poet in the Tang dynasty (AD 618—907), was  very talented and learned. He liked to discuss things with his friends, often voicing many ideas in a very eloquent manner,  just like the flow of a mighty river that could not be stopped. Later people started using tɑotɑo bu jue to describe  someone’s eloquence.
