What is a phrase?

A word is the smallest unit that can stand alone in a sentence, but not every word can form a sentence directly in Chinese. In most cases, a word works together with another word or words to form a phrase that is used as a unit of sentence, just like single persons form families that are units of a society, e.g.  
  
 

 
 
　　This is a simple sentence composed of two words directly. A more complex sentence can be formed by the group(s) of words which we call as phrase(s), e.g.
