On the bus to Shaoxing, I enjoyed the scenery outside the window along the road. My first impression of Shaoxing was of its tidiness. Streets in the city are in good order and full of energy with luxuriant trees along the streets. The citizens seem to be occupied with their own business, and even the pedestrians look so leisurely. The small river courses and stone bridges prove again that it is a water city. This is how Shaoxing impresses me at first sight.
After a 45 minutes’ trip in a black-awning boat, I began to learn about the life style of the local residents. Along the riverbanks are residential areas; the river plays a critical role in local people’s life. I witnessed that some elderly residents wash their clothes and tableware, and brush their teeth with the river water. Though it is not good for their health, I think maybe it is a tradition for the local residents in Shaoxing.
