Daoism: Eternal Life
Input Date:08/03/2006 Read: [Print] [Close]

The ancient Chinese had a special way to pursue for an eternal life. They endeavored to find the elixir. The efforts of the alchemists in the Warring States period for finding the elixir became the main way for seeking immortality in early Daoism. There were three schools of Daoist alchemists: One was the school headed by Peng Zu and Wang Qiao, which advocated breath exercises and was popular in the Wu and Yue areas in the south. Another school was the family school headed by Rong Chenggong and was popular in Central Shaanxi. The third school was the clothing-food school headed by An Qisheng and was popular in Yan and Qi areas.
The behaviors of the ancient Chinese pursuing immortality contributed rather directly to the shaping of the religious belief of Daoism in eternal life. The belief of Daoism in eternal life was but an extension of the longing, imbued with a more religious and mysterious flavor.
