In the repertoire, the Legend of the White Snake, a virgin is ordered to carry an earthen bowl and attempt to evil goblin. The evil goblin is a type of demon that must constantly change his appearance; sometimes handsome, sometimes ferocious, and sometimes lovely. The evil goblin changes his face into shades of green, red, white and black in various patterns seven or eight times in order to fully display his moods during the rounds of his battle with the white snake. When he shows his fourth brown face called” the magpies frolic on the branches of a plum tree,” he is pleased with his own scheming, erroneously believing himself to be the winner. At that exact moment, he reveals his chidlike happiness and claps his hands and jumps for joy. Hen he opens the magic ”weapon of the negative and positive” in which he assumed he had locked the white snake in, however, he fearfully exclaims: ”Oh, my! She has escaped!” With this discovery his face turn blue with anger and a black face mask suddenly appears on his face. Words simply cannot describe the vividness of the depiction of the evil goblin in The Legend of the White Snake.
