China has adopted official standards for the making of Mooncake, a traditional food for Chinese families on Mid-Autumn Day, the 15th of the eighth month of a Chinese Lunar Year.
The national criterion is aimed at ensuring the quality of Mooncake and protecting the rights of consumers, according to the China Federation of Commerce, the stipulator of the industrial specifications.
The criterion went into force on April 1 this year. People who have engaged in making or selling sub-quality Mooncakes will be punished in accordance with law.
China has over 8,000 Mooncake mills, which produce a total of 85,000 tons of the stuffed cakes a year, with the annual sales surpassing 6 billion yuan (about US$723 million), according to the federation.
