Since 1830s, motivated by the expansion of capitalism, the study of Confucianism began in America through missionary activities. From the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century, especially during World War I and World War II, the study has been further promoted for political and military reasons. The founding of the People's Republic of China and the triumph of China and the PDRK over America in the Korean War made Americans feel it necessary to work even harder in the study of Chinese history and present conditions. As a result, Chinese studies in America, including the study of Confucius, developed quickly. More Americans came to know about him. He was respected as a famous intellectual in Chinese history and Confucianism as representative of Chinese traditional culture. In the People's Almanac Handbook, published in 1985 in America, Confucius tops the list of the ten great thinkers in the world. "Confucianism has not only influenced Chinese throughout history and to the present time, but also the whole world…Special attention should be given to this great thinker as well as his teachings," Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan said.
Through a better understanding of Confucius, we wish that a bridge of friendship and cultural exchange will be built. May the world be filled with more love, justice and peace.
