Its last owner was Li Congke of the Lat- ter Tang Dynasty, who suffered defeat at the hands of the Qidan (Khitan) army. Taking the seal, the deposed emperor fled to a tower and, in a last ditch attempt to salvage his honor, set it ablaze. Li Congke thus perished and the seal of mandate was lost forever.
