
Tingzijian and guojielou, because the rent was cheaper, were often favored by the literati and urban bourgeois. Some of China's most famous writers-including Lu Xun, Cai Yuanpei, Guo Moruo, Mao Dun, Ba Jin, Ding Ling and Feng Zikai-lived in tingzijian. Some of those people also wrote about life in tingzijian. Many works by Eileen Chang, one of China's most popular writers of the 20th century, are set in tingzijian.
