Huangmei Opera developed out of the Huangmei caicha tune, preferred in the regions of Anhui, Jiangxi and Hubei provinces.
The original name was Huangmei tune or caichaxi (folk dance), which travelled as far as Anqing, east of Anhui, and was sung in
the local dialect. The music then became known as huaiqiang or huaidiao tunes. This was actually the predecessor of Huangmei
Opera.
