Hidden Symbolism of Mahjong
Input Date:06/18/2007 Read: [Print] [Close]

Some say the three dragon tiles represent the cardinal virtues taught by Confucius. The red dragon represents benevolence; the green dragon, sincerity; and the white dragon, filial piety. Given the layers of symbolism and meaning associated with the Mahjong tiles, people have been known to use Mahjong tiles to predict the future. For example,”1 bamboo" is a peacock-it indicates a change in direction of life. The”1 ball" is a pearl-it indicates the attainment of honor. The”1 wan" represents a barrier in life that will be lifted.
Whatever Mahjong's past, its present is unquestionable. Chinese love playing Mahjong. From the cities to the countryside, and from the desert to the mountains, the familiar sounds of Mahjong tiles echo in homes, along streets and in gaming rooms dedicated to Mahjong.
