Arts and crafts is another field in which Suzhou takes great pride: Sandalwood fans, woodcut New Year's pictures of Taohuawu Street, mahogany carvings and hand embroideries, to name just a few.
Among these disciplines, embroidery is particularly famous. It was said in the past, almost every woman in Suzhou could do embroidery and nobody would marry a girl who could not. Suzhou embroidery, started in Spring and Autumn Times (776 BC- 470BC), subsequently has a history of mare than 2,000 years.
