The classic novel, A Dream of the Red Mansions, opens in Changmen, an area located outside the city gate of Suzhou, and is depicted as a ”prime social congregation of the rich and cultured".
Women no doubt benefited from this refined environment—it is interesting to note that Suzhou was one of the areas in China that had the greatest number of recognized women writers during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
