Because of their history, these mansions have become so attractive as tourist destinations. Since they were opened to the public, hundreds of thousands of people have come to visit them and, one after another, these mansions have not only been restored and opened but also arranged as museums based on their own characteristics to show to visitors the various aspects of the Shanxi merchants.
Originally called Sanduotang (sanduo means "a lot of happiness, longevity and many children), Cao's Mansion is now the Sanduotang Museum; Qiao's Mansion now the Qixian Museum of Folk Customs; Wang's Mansion the Museum of Chinese Civilian Residential Housing and Qu's Mansion the Museum of the Culture about Shanxi Merchants.
