The rule of practicing Taijiquan is "to resist offence by stillness, subdue the enemy afterward.”Taijiquan teaches that while the opponent is supposed to attack you, you must feel out the opponent's faults or mistakes in his strength; if he doesn't make a mistake, then you must force him to do so.
The rule you should follow: If you don't attack me, I will not attack you; if you use offense on me first, I will take actions immediately. It teaches to use the unbalance of the opponent's body to control him and it is more important to keep oneself in a favorable position; which is also the essence of Chinese political and life philosophy.
