Input Date:03/04/2007 Read: [Print] [Close]

The theory of the five elements generalizes all matters in the universe. All matters and phenomena are classified into five large categories through the use of analogies. The categorization of matters in line with the five elements is not meant to equate them to wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Instead, it is to describe the nature and function of the matters under scrutiny as analogous to the attributions of the five elements. For example, when the nature of an object is similar to that of wood, we may say this object corresponds to wood; when the nature of an object is similar to fire, we may say this object corresponds to fire. Other examples classifying matters and phenomena according to the five element follow below.
The theory of the five elements does not simply group matters and phenomena into five categories, but goes on to explore and explain the relationships between all matters and phenomena, as well as the equilibrium between them in the light of their mutual promotion and restriction. Furthermore, it investigates the impact produced by the breakdown of this equilibrium.
