
Xie Daoyun, a native of Hrnan Province in central China. was a celebrated poetess of the late Eastern Jin Dynasty (317一并20). Xie Daoyun was the daughter of Xie Yi, known as the general who pacified the west. Her uncle was the great poet, Xie
An, and her husband was Wang Ningzhi, son of the master calligrapher Wang Xizhi. In her youth Xie Daoyun was known for her extraordinary intelligence. Her three volumes of literary works, including poetry, rhyming prose, elegiacs and panegyrics, have been lost except for two poems. The two extant poems attributed to Xie Daoyun display her "clarity of thinking, profundity of intention and transcending artistry."
