Placing the Dumplings
Input Date:01/23/2007 Read: [Print] [Close]

Chinese people are particular about the placement of dumplings on lunar New Year's Eve. In Shandong, for example, people generally place several ingot-shaped dumplings in the center of a round vat lid, and then neatly place dumplings around them in circles. That is called "quanfu,” or circling for good fortune. Some families place 99 dumplings on each round vat lid as a prayer for "long-term happiness’(In Chinese, "99" and 'fiujiu, a long time" are homophonic. )
People living in different regions of China have their own customs. In Heilongjiang Province,in northern China, rural households arrange dumplings in lines, rather than in circles, because they believe that is the only way they will have access to financial resources.
