Film Awards in China
The Huabiao Film Awards (华表奖 Huábiǎo Jiǎnɡ), established in 1955, are the highest honor for Chinese films. The trophy is modeled after the huabiao (paired ceremonial columns erected in front of a palace, tomb, etc., usually carved with dragon and phoenix patterns, with an engraved stone slab on its top) in front of Tian’anmen in Beijing, hence it is named Huabiao Film Awards. Huabiao Film Awards are chosen and appraised by comparison annually by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, therefore regarded as Chinese film awards by the government.
Hundred Flowers Awards (百花奖Bǎihuā Jiǎnɡ), set up in 1962 and sponsored by China’s largest film magazine Populace Movie(《大众电影》Dàzhònɡ Diànyǐnɡ), are determined annually by the poll of the magazine’s readers. “Hundred flowers” symbolize the free development of different forms and styles in the Chinese film field and can be considered Chinese film awards by the masses.
Golden Rooster Awards(金鸡奖Jīnjī Jiǎnɡ) were started in 1981, the year of the Rooster according to Chinese traditional lunar calendar, hence the name “Golden Rooster Awards of Chinese Film”. The awarding committee is composed of authoritative experts and conducts its work from an academic perspective. Thus the awards can be regarded as Chinese film awards by the experts.
Hundred Flowers Awards(百花奖 Bǎihuā Jiǎnɡ) and Golden Rooster Awards (金鸡奖 Jīnjī Jiǎnɡ) together are called “the Twin Awards of Chinese Film”(中国电影双奖 Zhōnɡɡuó Diànyǐnɡ Shuānɡ Jiǎnɡ). Since 1991, they have been issued together. In 1992 the awarding ceremony became a film festival, called “Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival”, (金鸡百花电影节 Jīnjī Bǎihuā Diànyǐnɡjié) which is an annual grand occasion in Chinese movie circles.
In 2005, it was decided that Hundred Flowers Awards and Golden Rooster Awards are issued in turn every other year, i.e., they have become biennial events. In October, 2006, the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The Hundred Flowers Awards were decided by the vote of 99 movie audience viewers who were chosen on the Internet, and the best feature film was Zhang Side, a film from the mainland.
