Ax is another image in folk art works. It was first seen on painted pottery of 6000-year-old Yangshao culture from Linru Temple, Henan and pottery carving of Dawenkou culture in Shandong. Then the same image was found on the pottery from tile primitive-society cultural relics in Shijiahe, Hubei. It is believed that along the Yangtze River valley to the Yellow River basin, ax had been a symbol to safeguard house and tomb from evil spirits and epidemics for several thousand years, and it is still being used today.
