The Cursive Script or the Simple , Hasty Script appeared already in the seal period , but formed its independent style later in the Han Dynasty . According to its historical development , it can be divided into three phases : official cursive script , current cursive script and wild cursive script . The strokes of the official cursive script had traces of the undulating strokes of the official script . Its structure was simple and concise . Between the strokes there were some connections , but the words were not connected . The horizontal and the falling strokes kept the undulating forms of the official script . It had a vertical tendency . Among the famous official cursive script calligraphists were Zhang Zhi , Shi You and Du Cao in the Han Dynasty and Suo Jing and Lu Ji in the Western Jin Dynasty . “Ping Fu Rubbing” is a rubbing of this calligraphical work of Lu Ji now preserved . The current cursive script , also known as the small cursive script , was developed after the appearance of the regular script on the basis of the official cursive script , and eliminated the undulation of the strokes .

The word above and the word below were often connected and the components of the words were often used in common . It facilitated the changing and turning of the strokes . So , it was more flowing and rhythmic and was written swiftly . In the Eastern Jin Dynasty , Wang Xianzhi developed the cursive script on the basis of the cursive script calligraphy of his father Wang Xizhi , with an even freer hand and more connections between the successive words , and founded a new style of the current cursive script , followed by the later generations up to the present . The “Seventeenth Rubbing” was the representative work of Wang Xizhi current cursive script calligraphy . The Wild Cursive Script , also known as the Big Cursive Script , was even freer and wider . It was continuous and unbroken between the words and carried itself onward extremely swiftly . The famous wild cursive script calligraphists included Zhang Xu and Huai Su in the Tang Dynasty . The “Autobiography Rubbing” of Huai Su was a typical calligraphical work of the wild cursive script .

The Running Script , known also as “Xing Ya” Script , is a script between the Regular Script and the cursive script . It was a facile and flowing script . It could be nearer to the regular script , called running regular script . It also could be nearest to the cursive script , called the running cursive script . Its dots and strokes were often connected by a gossamer line . Its strokes followed and turned vigorously and lively , like a floating cloud or a flowing stream , giving a natural and vivid impression . It was rather plain air in the Wei-Jin Dynasties , but was innovated by Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty , whose graceful and flowing new style took the place of the old plain style and brought the running script to a new perfect level . Wang Xianzhi’s running script calligraphy showed the vigor and fluency of this script . His representative script calligraphy was the “Introduction to Orchid Pavilion”. In the Song Dynasty , the four famous calligraphists Cai Xiang , Su Shi , Huan Tingjian and Mi Fu were all versed in the running script calligraphy and good at the expressing their sentiments through their works . They founded the sentiments expressing calligraphical style in the Song Dynasty . In the Ming Dynasty , Dong Qichang was the most prominent running script calligraphists , whose works displayed a simple elegance ..
