Xiangji Temple Pagoda lies at Shenhe plain southwest of Weiqu town of Chang’an county in Shaanxi province ,
about 17 kilometers away from Xi’an city . Erected in the second year of the reign of Shenlong of Emperor Zhong (706 A.D.) in the Tang Dynasty , it is a famous old Tang temple . It was constructed in memory of Monk Shan Dao , the founder of the Chinese Buddhist Pure Land Sect . So it occupies an important place in the history of Buddhism in China . The ancient pagoda has brick walls and wooden plan floors . The plans have been destroyed , so it cannot be ascended . It has square plane 9.5 m. on each side . Originally , it had 13 storeys , but only 10 storeys remain now with a 33-mete height , as he apex of it was damaged . It was designed to be a dense-eaves storeyed pagoda . It has a high ground storey . Compared with other Tang pagodas , it has a more intricate structure and is therefore of importance in the architectural history .
Nanchan Temple is situated in Lijazhuang Village of Yanghai Township of Wutai County in Shanxi Province . Its
main hall was built about 1,200 years ago in third year of the reign of Jianzhong in the Tang Dynasty (728) and is the oldest wooden architecture now existent .
It is not large in size . Its main hall is three partitions square . It has no inside pillars and is supported by two brackets and four rafters . Between the corbels there are no supplemental structures . The roof is not very sloped .The eaves protrude far outward . It is elegant and well proportioned , and of the typical Tang wooden architecture style . Most of the pillars of the temple are round , but three pillars are square , which probably were the original pillars . Such square pillars are seen only in Dunhuang frescoes . These are the real square pillars firs found .
The Three Pagodas in Dali . The three pagodas are located at the
foot of Mount Cang , three li north of Dali city in Yunnan province , leaning westward to Mount Cang and eastward to the glistening calm waves of Erhai Lake , presenting a resplendent natural scene . The chief pagoda was built around the eighth century in the mid . Tang Dynasty and the later period of Nanzhao kingdom . The two small pagodas were built around the tenth century in the early Song Dynasty in the Dali Kingdom .
The three paodas are positioned as a tripod . The chief pagoda , called Qianxun Pagoda , stands upright on a two-layered base with stone banisters .It is 70 m . high . It is a square brick pagoda with 16 storeys of dense eaves . Aside from the overlapped puckers , the whole pagoda is painted white with lime plaster . On the four sides of each storey there are niches . In the tow opposite niches are placed Buddha statuettes . The other two niches are windows . The niches of the next storeys are used alternatively so as to facilitate lighting and ventilation . The ground storey of it is about 13-meters high . The two small pagodas are more than 40 meters high , and are 10-storeyed dense-eaves octagonal brick pagodas . The outside of the small pagoda is painted as a storeyed pagoda . There is a pillar at each corner . There are level seats at each storey , and corbels at the fourth and sixth storeys . Under the eaves are connected windows with relief carvings . The apex of it is gilded . So , it looks very splendid .
