Approximately in the 22nd year of the reign of kaiyuan (734 A.D.) in the Tang Dynasty , a forceful earthquake occurred , causing the peak to break up in the middle , dividing the grottos into to parts : the eastern grotto complex and the western grotto complex . Currently the eastern grotto complex has 54 grottos and the western grotto complex has 140 grottos , containing altogether more than 7,000 clay and stone Buddha statues , along with more than 1,000 m(平方米) of frescoes . These Buddha statues were sculpted from the end of the fourth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century . The giant clay Buddha statue sculpted in the Sui Dynasty , is over fifteen meters tall . Above this statue is a typical Han cliff attic—Seven Buddha’s Attic . Below this statue are two grottos with fairly perfect stone eaves and a three-partition frame .

All the clay and stone statues here , whether they were sculpted in a thin , slender shape in the Southern-Northern Dynasties , or in a plump mellow shape in the later dynasties , evidence the unique Chinese sculptural style , combining appearance and spirit .
On the top of Mount Maiji is a 9.4-meter high dagoba built during the reign of Emperor Wen of Northern Wei Dynasty . A visitor looking afar from the top of the mount enjoys a view of mountains , valleys , seas of green pine trees and drifting clouds . The scene , which is called “Maiji Misty Rain” , is the first of the eight wonderful scenes of Tianshui .
Faguang Temple , is situated in Faguang village twenty five kilometers northeast of Mount Wutai in Shanxi province . It was constructed on the hillside facing the east ,with a spacious inner yard and more than one hundred and twenty halls , chamber and pavilions . It was founded during the reign of Emperor Xiao Wen of Northern Wei Dynasty (471-499) . Its name appears often in historical records . In the olden days it used to have large congregations of disciples. In the fifth year of the reign of Huichang in the Tang Dynasty , when a nation-wide campaign was launched to abolish Buddhism, the whole temple was destroyed .

The main hall of the temple was rebuilt in the 11th year of the reign of Dazhong in the Tang Dynasty . It is seven-partitions wide and four-rows deep , with imposing eaves and corbels . The pillars , corbels , tablets, doors , windows and walls are all painted with red clay, making the architecture appear simple and antique . Both in construction style and in proportion of the structure , the temple shows strongly the special features of the wooden buildings in the Tang Dynasty . So ,the temple occupies an important place in the history of Chinese and world architecture. Besides the architecture , the Tang-style sculptures ,murals and calligraphic works are all famous . They are prized together as “four wonders”.
