(BEIJING, January 21) -- The 2008 International Weightlifting Invitational Tournament, one of the "Good Luck Beijing" sport events, will unveil at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA) Gymnasium from January 22 to 23, 2008, according to a press conference held here on Monday afternoon.
Weightlifters from 14 countries and regions, including China, Spain, France, Germany, Greece and Hungary, will compete in the Tournament, with two weight categories for each gender, said the organizers.
According to the competition schedule, the two-day tournament will feature two men's and two women's weight categories (men's 56kg and +105kg; women's 53kg and +75kg). Each category will have two groups with 10 weightlifters each. In the case where there is an uneven number of competitors in the groups, the Chinese Weightlifting Association will send more athletes to the competition to ensure the event will go on uninterrupted.
Totally in accordance with the regulations of the Beijing Olympic weightlifting competition, the total for the weightlifters' two lifts will be taken as their final scores.
The International Weightlifting Federation will rectify the weightlifters' international rankings based on their scores in the Tournament.
The tournament will be held in accordance with the Olympic standards and will be an overall test of venue operation and competition management. With the help and support of all parties concerned, the BUAA Gymnasium venue team has made great efforts and good preparations for the upcoming tournament, said Li Yong, deputy chief of media of the venue operation team of the BUAA Gymnasium, in the press conference.
