Novak Djokovic ended Lleyton Hewitt's dreams of claiming the Australian Open title with a straight-sets defeat. Despite the strong support of the home fans in the Rod Laver Arena, Hewitt was simply outclassed by the impressive Djokovic, who completed a comprehensive 7-5 6-3 6-3 victory.
In the quarterfinals, Djokovic will meet No. 5 seed David Ferrer who overcame fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-1. Roger Federer cruised past No. 13 seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to book his place in the next stage where he will play No. 12 seed James Blake, who easily defeated Marin Cilic 63 64 64.
Venus Williams reached the last eight with a hard-fought win over Poland's Marta Domachowska. The American twice came back from a break down in the first set on her way to a 64 64 victory. Williams will play Ana Ivanovic who was too good for Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in a tough encounter. Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, staged an amazing fightback to triumph over Nadia Petrova of Russia 16 75 60. She next plays Daniela Hantuchova, who came back from a set and 3-1 down to prevail over Maria Kirilenko 16 64 64.
