Five members bid for 2015 South Pacific Games

APIA, Samoa, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Five members are bidding to host the 2015 South Pacific Games (SPG), the largest sports event in the region.

Sports officials attending the 13th South Pacific Games here said Tuesday the five countries and regions are Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, American Samoa and Tonga.

The Pacific Games Annual General Meeting held here this week ruled the five countries and regions have to conduct feasibility study and present their bid packages at the next Pacific games council meeting in Cook Islands during the 2009 Mini Games.

New Caledonia is to host the 2011 South Pacific Games following a vote by the Games Council in 2005.

The South Pacific Games is a multi-sport event, with participation exclusively from countries and territories around the South Pacific. It is held every four years and began in 1963, hosted by Suva, Fiji.

The 13th South Pacific Games held in Apia, Samoa, between Aug. 25 and Sept. 8, are attended by nearly 5,000 athletes from 22 countries and territories to compete in 33 sports categories.
