China wins 8 gymnastics golds (photo attached)

  BEIJING, July 18 -- Chinese gymnasts turned in a commanding performance in the Shanghai FIG World Cup gymnastics competition, winning eight gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes over the weekend.

  China, which is hoping for a large medal haul at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, took four of a possible five gold medals Saturday, plus a silver and two bronzes.

  In the men's events, the 2005 pommel horse world champion Xiao Qin took gold, beating teammate and 2004 Olympic gold medallist Teng Haibing.

  Chen Yibing took gold in the rings.

  Only the men's floor exercise gold eluded China, with Brazil's Diego Hypolito taking the title.

  Xiao Tingting took her first gold medal in the women's asymmetric bars while Cheng Fei won gold in the women's vault.

  On Sunday, the host won four golds and a silver.

  Du Wei took gold in the men's vault while Feng Zhe won the men's parallel bars at the Changning Gymnastics Center.

  In the women's events, Pang Panpan snatched gold in the beam and Cheng Fei did the same in the floor.

  This year's event was the first of three consecutive World Cup legs to be held in China up to 2008.
