(BEIJING, August 10) -- The Executive Board of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) held its 70th session in Beijing on Thursday, underlining the importance of services for national and regional Olympic committees.
After hearing a report on the subject, the meeting stressed that the national and regional Olympic committees are the mainstay of the Olympic Games. Quality and efficient services for the Olympic committees and athletes are the key to holding a successful Olympiad.
Quality services for the Olympic committees are the major component of the Games services at large and the direct and essential carrier to make "People's Olympics" a reality. The services are also a bridge to enhance cooperation in the field of sports between China and other participating counties and regions and an importance platform to erect China's image as a country for friendship and peace, according to the meeting.
The meeting called for special assignment of persons responsible for a certain national Olympic committee, in-depth knowledge of the needs of various Olympic committees and greater efforts to analyze in detail the service contents, with an aim to provide high-quality, thorough and specific services for different national and regional Olympic committees.
It urged the recruitment as early as possible of volunteers of different levels, their training according to the specific needs of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games as well as the establishment of a group of people who render many-sided and high-level services.
Meanwhile concerned departments of BOCOG are required to strengthen coordination and cooperation and set up an efficient cooperative mechanism and working procedure.
Attendees at the meeting also heard reports on preparation progress of the 2006 Qingdao International Regatta and the International Softball Federation (ISF) XI Women's World Championship.
The Good Luck Beijing - 2006 Qingdao International Regatta will be held at the Qingdao International Marina from August 18 to 31. Under the leadership of BOCOG and the local government, the Qingdao Sailing Sub-committee sticks to the principle of mutual progress between development and the Olympic Games to bring about social harmony and economic development whilst pushing forward the preparatory work for the impending event.
The ISF XI Women's World Championship will be held at Beijing's Fengtai Softball Field from August 27 through September 5, 2006. A total of 16 national and regional teams will compete in the championship, with over 500 athletes, technical officers, foreign media, and ISF guests expected to take part.
An Olympic test event, the championship will qualify four teams for the 2008 Olympic Softball competition. Through the staging of the champion, organizers will check the running of the Olympic operation pattern and the venue facilities while the Olympic operation team will be able to gain experiences.
The preparatory work for the championship has been making notable progress in terms of venue construction and operation, security, environmental management and reception service since this January when the work first started.
The organizers are committed to making sure that the two events are well-organized and accumulating experience for the 29th edition of the Olympic Summer Games by settling problems in the course of the competitions.
BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC and secretary of the Beijing Municipal CPC Committee, chaired the meeting.
